Our second time using San Francisco Movers - a five star experience again! This second move was a tricky one - two different elevator systems in a large residential building... read more in SF to a house up a windy, narrow mountain road in Los Gatos. The guys were on point, highly responsive, and took great care wrapping and handling our items.

Moving is stressful. That's why we decided to use SF movers for a 2nd time when moving from SF to San Mateo. Alper, Ferat and Markus were extremely fast, efficient... read more and careful with our things. They packed everything with care and made sure no items were left behind. They also got everything to fit in a small box truck (impressive Tetris!). I would recommend SF movers to anyone who wants it done professionally, rather than hurting yourself or breaking your possessions.

This is the second time we've used San Francisco Movers. The first time was great with very few issues (and I would still give them 5 stars for local moves!).... read more This time was good moving-wise for our long distance move to the LA area, but there were several miscommunications.
Before I get into the problems, let me say the crews they sent on both ends of the move were completely amazing. They carefully wrapped and took care of all our heavy expensive furniture, and everything made it safely. They were extremely friendly and helpful and I trusted them completely. The guys unloading the truck even helped us try out several living room configurations for our weird new space. Some furniture got some dings despite the care, but that is to be expected in my opinion - minor scuffs are no big deal! The important stuff is still in perfect condition.
In SF we had Slavo and Alper and one more moving us out, and in LA we had a team of 5 unload us (whose names I missed in the whirlwind of the move, sorry!).
As for the issues, it was all with the office boss, Alex. I booked over the phone and got a specific long distance flat rate that was much cheaper than any other mover I called, so we booked it. For our previous move, there were different rates for cash and credit card, but the confirmation email had the one rate and said either cash or card would work so I didn't worry about it. When moving day came, they said the price was for cash only and they would charge an extra $1000 if I paid with credit card. We panicked a bit because we both only have online banking so I had no idea how to get a hold of thousands of dollars in cash, but we were able to secure a cash advance limit increase on my debit card. We decided to withdraw the money on the second day when they delivered our items so we wouldn't be driving 6 hours with a ton of cash. But then the foreman said we needed to pay half on the move out day and half on the move in day. They believed me when I said that they had forgotten to say anything about it and said we could pay on delivery.
With that out of the way, we got the trucks packed up and headed to LA. They told me the window for the stuff to arrive would be 11-12. We planned to get the cash before they arrived. The trucks showed up at 9:30am unexpectedly, and I let them know I had to head out to get food and cash to pay them. They started unloading. However, while I was out my partner called and said they had stopped moving us and their boss wouldn't let them continue until we presented the cash for payment. At this point they had my credit card info already as a back up anyways - I'm not sure why they needed the cash immediately; but I understand that some people are terrible and may have tried to get out of it in the past. So I said fine I'll grab the cash. It took me 2 hours of stress and crying to find a bank that would do a cash advance that large, but to the crew's credit they did patiently wait for it.
If Alex had more clearly communicated all these terms ahead of time we could have saved a lot of the drama involved in those moving days. It would have been even better if they stated the terms more clearly in their confirmation email, because if they did tell me ahead of time I must not have understood what he said. I think they spoiled a lot of their good service by making this part needlessly traumatic.
Another side issue we had (not necessarily the fault of the company) is that they don't do an inspection to see if the truck you booked will be big enough, and only rely on the number of bedrooms. We were moving from a two bedroom apartment but had an extra bonus room (I did mention that extra room at booking). They said the 26ft truck should hold up to a 3 bedroom but we had lots of books and wall art and a bunch of large furniture, so we had to book an extra truck at the last second. I didn't realize we weren't a normal sized household until we were numbering box 100, and a more detailed quote process would have caught that oversight ahead of time. That being said, when I realized and called ahead of our move, Alex was super good at setting expectations and explaining the backup plan of an extra truck.
TL;DR: This company does a great job for a very competitive price if you pay in cash. Just make sure you double check the size of your move and all the terms (like when and how you are expected to pay) before you confirm your booking.
